Community experiences

Selected positive personal experiences from external communities, edited and summarized. These accounts do not establish effectiveness.

A contributor whose eyes often felt dry during computer work wrote that eye strain and dryness decreased while taking lutein together with omega-3. They explained that allergic reactions to common preservatives in eye drops and to a previous multivitamin led them to choose separate supplements for the individual ingredients. This was a personal experience using both ingredients, not evidence of lutein's effect alone or that it can replace eye drops.

Questions before taking a supplement

Sources checked:

Is lutein with zeaxanthin and astaxanthin the same as AREDS2?

No. The NEI AREDS2 formula includes lutein 10 mg, zeaxanthin 2 mg, vitamins C and E, zinc and copper, but not astaxanthin. A multi-ingredient eye supplement does not automatically match the studied formula.

Who can benefit from the AREDS2 evidence on lutein?

The AREDS2 formula may slow progression in intermediate AMD or when late AMD affects only one eye. This is not proof of improved eyesight in healthy eyes or relief of screen fatigue. An eye diagnosis determines whether the formula is appropriate.

What is Lutein?

Lutein is a carotenoid pigment found in foods such as leafy green vegetables and in the macula of the eye. Zeaxanthin is a related but separate carotenoid.
